OHSU vs UNLV

So I've already paid my $1,000 deposit to OHSU. Just last night i get a call from UNLV for an acceptance. I wouldn't even consider the switch except there is a huge tuition difference. OHSU would be a total of 410k and UNLV would be 265k. However i just love OHSU in every way, in my opinion it's a much nicer school than UNLV as well. Thoughts? FYI I have to make my decision by March 1st.

There are places you could buy a first house with that kind of money.
You could have that extra money to start your first practice.
You could buy a new Tesla and have some leftover with that.
You could go on a cruise every year for 40 years (and not the crappy ones, but a decent balcony) with that kind of money.
You could buy 10 Honda accords with that money.
You could literally eat every single day of your life at Taco Bell with that kind of money.
You could buy a Cerec with that money.
You could go to school 4x+ @ 4 years at a state school and get degrees in Engineering, Computer science, Statistics, and business. The list goes on.

Oregon is a great school, I hope to go there (I'm In state though).

Is that 410k COA or just tuition alone? Because the 265k at UNLV is just tuition. If you're comparing just tuition alone, that's pretty significant.

EDIT: Just checked my UNLV folder, assuming you're OOS for both. UNLV is still close to 400k for COA which includes everything, not just tuition.

I was in a similar situation with a (super expensive) school that I loved but also got the call from UNLV yesterday. Dropping that other acceptance so fast and thanking my lucky stars that UNLV admitted me. That is a ton of money to save, especially if you consider interest.

So that number isn't just tuition but everything combined. I'm an Arizona resident, however UNLV offers in-state tuition after your first year, that's why there is a huge price difference.

If your using the info provided to you by UNLV, they leave out the cost of living in their calculation. In the ADEA guide, the calculation they give for the total cost of attendance is ~$400,000.

Yeah then the price gap isn't as huge as you think. If you love OHSU in every way, then 30-50k difference isn't that huge. You'll make the right decision.

Its prob closer to 100k difference from what I'm looking at online. Even a 50k difference to me is huge, thats 1 extra year of payments. 50k is enough for a Toyota Tacoma with all the trimmings.

It's hard to justify losing that much money. At either school you will almost certainly receive a fine education, if not fantastic. Also, I don't know too much about COL in Vegas, but I'm fairly certain it's cheaper than Portland.

Yes. UNLV is something like 95k for first year, and 58k as IS for D2-D4 in tuition alone.

95k + 60k X 3 is 275k? Where are you getting 410k from. Let's say 20k a year for living. That's still 355k.

And that's why I said there is about a 50k difference between the COA. Also, I remember what the financial advisor said during the interview and what ranges he usually sees.

I'm assuming he is OOS for OHSU, in which case 410-420k versus 355k come out to about 60-65k. It could be as low as 50k depending on how much he cuts.

That is 120k difference not 50k.

Yup, my math is off. UNLV D4 is pretty cheap. Go to the cheaper school.

oh crap I've been looking at the wrong tuition sheet.

My mistake it's about a 70k different pre interest. Which is still a large chunk of money.

Yeah I looked at OSU's tuition sheet not Oregon by accident. The difference is about 60k-70k, so it's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

Vancouver Washington is only separated from Portland by the Columbia river, they are only a few miles apart. You're thinking of Vancouver B.C., which is indeed about 5 hours north of Portland.

With no traffic, going from Vancouver to the school takes about 13 mins. With morning traffic, it takes about 45.

Correct! (Depending on where in Vancouver you live) My mom works at the VA hospital which is "connected" to the OHSU Med school hospital ( fairly close to the dental school) and she gets to work in about 15 minutes without traffic.

So i spoke with the financial advisor at UNLV and the total for me with 1st year out of state and then next 3 years in- state would be a grand total of $392,000 whereas OHSU is $418,000. So over exaggerated at first a little. However, cost of living is a lot cheaper in Vegas and i could get a nicer place. But i like OHSU school a lot more. Anyone go to UNLV that can shed some light on how you like the school? because i always hear the students are high stress there and the integrated curriculum is not so great.
