ok another application strength questions

My first quarter at Berkeley went by kinda rough, infact i got a c- in a required general biology course. I am planning on taking it at a JC just to be safe and do well in it . Here is the question : What do you guys think the admissions committees will see that as? Weakness in my part , or nothing at all IF I do really well in the same general biology course at a JC?

You can retake it at another 4 yrs college but don't take it at a JC because in your situation it may be taken as taking the easy way out after a lack luster grade.

HAHA... it sounds like Im reading about myself. I did all my sciences in two years and jumped right into a semester with bio chem and calc. I got a C in the most basic bio course. I am going to assume that you just partied it up or did not know what to expect from college science courses. Now that you know exactly what that class is all about... retake it and make sure to improve in your future courses. Just remember... if you cant pull Bs in undergrad... dental school is going to be painful.... good luck....

umm, if you can't pull Bs in undergrad, you're not going to get in to dental school 🙄

you have 3 more years to prove that you can make it in dental school. If C- is not passing then retake it, otherwise just focus on the next few years and do well. You should be fine.

I don't know if C- is pass or not but I had a C in my first bio. Class and I never retook it. I never let it happen again and all my other bio. and science classes were As and Bs so don't waste time taking it again, focus on your upcoming semesters and do well in every class you take. Admission committees want to see improvements and you getting better and better everyone makes mistakes and most students do have a couple low grades but the important thing is not letting it happen AGAIN.

actually, howui and benson make a good point! why bother retaking it at all? if you kick butt from here on out, adcoms won't give it a second look. 👍

By the time you're a senior, you'll realize there was no need. Make sure you go to office hours and get help at the SLC if you're having trouble. It really does help. If you're serious about some sort of graduate level education, you're going to need to take these undergrad classes seriously. The classes at Berkeley will prepare you well for the DAT and make the basic science stuff in dental school a breeze. Just make sure you work hard now so you can get in. The classes are extremely big and it's easy to get lost. Noone around to catch you but yourself if you fall. PM me if you wanna talk about anything further, I can probably help you avoid some of my mistakes.

I also went to Berkeley and was a MCB major and also had some C's (one C and one C+). All other grades were A's and B's. One of my pre-req's (Biochem) was a C+ and it wasn't brought up in any interview. UCSF didn't seem to mind. 🙂
