I already submited deposit to Oklahoma after Dec 1st acceptance and was making plans to attend, however got an acceptance from UNLV yesterday. I loved both the schools. Personaly know some people who attended OKlahoma and loved it. Both school are out of state for me, but since I have HPSP scholarship the tuition is not that important. I have 2 little ones (4&6) and Oklahoma-City just seemed for me to be a beter fit for them then Vegas. What you guys think? Thank you in advance.

My wife and I faced a similar situation. We have a 18 mnth old son and most likely have another while in dental school. We had to decided between Michigan and UNLV, ultimately we chose UNLV. Las Vegas strip is a negative influence but the surrounding areas where we will actually live is actually quite nice. Plus, UNLV has a lot of students that have small/young families, which will help us fit in. Compare the technology of the two schools and the class sizes. Which do you prefer? Which is closer to family, if that matters? Another plus with Las vegas is a lot of cheap family entertainment. AND, I've been told that they have good public schools there because of all the funding. So that may be a plus for your 2 kids. Check that out though. I can see that being true because of all the money the state gets from casinos. Then, you can also compare the cost of living, which is best for you?

In addition, UNLV is gonna be awesome!!! 😀

I hope to get into UNLV, it is a great school! I went to High School here and have lived here since I graduated college (2 years). As far as the public school system, it is not very good. We have some of the worst schools in the nation. There is alot to do with families outside of the strip. Like Dr.Eagle said, compare the costs of living. I know that Oklahoma is much cheaper than las vegas. My brother went to law school at tulsa and now lives here. But it is much cheaper to live here than it used to be a few years ago. In the end, you have to weigh what is best for you and your family. Good luck!

I visited Oklahoma and really liked it. I would personally choose Oklahoma over UNLV. Congratulations on both!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Oklahoma require you to do all of your own lab work? They don't pay to have any of it sent out? That would be a big factor for me.

I don't know who told you Las Vegas has good public schools... somebody lied to you!

Thank you all for the inputs. I leaning towards sticking with Oklahoma. The cost of living is cheaper there, so my AF stipend will go a longer way there. Also, during my interview in Oklahoma we were shown a video that mentioned a recent renovation of all public schools as a result of partnership between the city and the school districts. It just seemed that people were taking a real pride of their city. It was my first time in Vegas as well, but it seemed too rushed with constant traffic and construction. I talked to a student with a family during my interview there and he said that it not bad for the family, but you really have to be careful choosing the area and the school were not that great for kids.
Like I said before both schools impressed me very much. UNLV's facilities and curriculum sounded very interesting, plus they seemed very supportive of student initiatives. I do not really know any doctors that graduated from UNLV, but I have worked with several Oklahoma graduates and they were all considered very skillful doctors by their peers. So may be doing all of your lab work in dental school is not such a bad idea😉
Anyway, I was very excited about my choices. Can't wait to be a D1. Thank you again to all and good luck!

Good choice I was a here in Las Vegas and now a student at UNLV. Good choice I would have choose Oklahoma over UNLV. Strip no big deal unless your kids are over 16, school systems suck because lack of education of parents. students can go get a job down on the strip and make 60,000 a year cleaning toilets ..why not do that, and many other reasons good choice. UNLV is great but for your situation you made the right choice.
