I was wondering if someone could elaborate (or point me to some good links) on how old grades received well prior to my admission to my undergrad uni would affect my chances for med school. For instance, terribel gpa (less than 2 at an art school when i was 17/18 and now 3.5-4.0 is what I'm projecting to graduate with (excluding the less than C's that were not transferred to my current uni).

Maybe I'm not using the best search terms, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding this information for some reason.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

You need to list all college classes on your AMCAS application, including college-level courses taken in high school. It doesn't matter how old the classes are. You need to list them all.

I assume "art school" is considered a college, so that <2 will lower your cumulative GPA. Some schools might overlook it because it's not science-related and it happened in the distant past. Others might just look at the GPA without checking to see that the poor grades were in art classes many years ago.

I've been retaking as many bad grades as I can, but I just found out about the retake policy that AMCAS has. =\

"art school" was an Art Institute and a few bad grades (less than 12 credits) at a community college. Bad grades totaling no more than 30 credits I believe, maybe less. Unfortunately, I do not have the transcript handy.

You can recover from less than 30 credits of bad grades.

Do the math. Combine 3.x of however many credits you have at your current school with 1.x of however many credits (under 30) from before.

If your current GPA is decent, you should at least come in around a mid-3, which is still competitive for most schools.

If I were you I would request transcripts from those schools. This will probably cost you some money (most like a total of $10 if I read correctly and you has two schools). Then you will know how many credits to add on and the grade to calculate the GPA medical schools will see.
