I am a OMFS intern.. I just took the CBSE and unfortunately got a horrible score (50s). I want to reach out before I decide to not send any residency applications out in case there is a slight chance I could still match at a 4 year program somewhere. I have pretty good grades from dental school and I just started my internship. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I am a current OMFS intern (1 year non-categorical) at a great program. I just took the CBSE and unfortunately got a horrible score, well below what I would consider acceptable for any program (low 50s). I want to reach out before I decide to not send any residency applications out in case there is a slight chance I could still match at a 4 year program somewhere. I have pretty good grades from dental school and I just started my internship at a major hospital system/very respectable OMFS program. Is there any chance in hell to get into a 4 year program with a CBSE score in the low 50s? Or should I just save my money and count on doing another intern year after this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
This is a tough situation because good OMFS program generally means a busy program. At this point you’ve checked all the boxes except for meeting this very important one. What is your plan on improving that score to at least get it in the mid to high 60’s?

You will not get in with a score in the 50s. The average has gone up a lot (especially in the past 1-2 years). There are people with scores in the 60s and 70s who go unmatched every year. If you were smart enough to do well in Dental School (top 25%) then you should be able to get at least a 70+.
Perhaps try changing how you are preparing and studying for the exam. Try something different.
