Hey guys,
Just wanted to give you something to think about while your out on the interview trail...
Most of you will have the opportunity to travel the country to multiple programs in different great cities/hospitals. For those of you who will be blessed with the opportunity to interview over 8-10 programs, they will all start to blend together and you might forget their strengths and weaknesses. with that in mind...i have a couple suggestions that might be helpful.
1. Before going into interviews, write down a prioritized criteria sheet for your self. This will included all of the major points that are important to you for the next 4/6 years at that program and beyond after graduation. here is an example of a few things i used as a filter during my interview cycle.
A. OMFS Scope of practice
-Hospital based vs Dental School based
-Broad vs. limited scope, varying ranges
B. Faculty- Full-time/part-time
C. Resident-morale/camaraderie
D. Location
E. 4 vs 6 year program
F. OMFS exposure time (32-42months)
G. Medical school curriculum
H. Other (Whats important to you ?)
2. Now while on the interviews get your self a notebook and keep track of all of the programs' pros/cons as you go. Use your pre-determined filters to decipher between what is important and superficial to you and your training.
Hope that helps some...and don't forget to have fun, it's a great opportunity.
Good luck!
