I did this. Did a non cat right after dental school, has a family event that happened during my D4-noncat year that didn't allow me to apply...Finished my noncat, re-wrote CBSE in July right after completing non cat and improved my score by a solid margin. When working in private practice as a general dentist, I was first assist in the hospital with a plastics, ENT and OMFS group and did call with them. Went every Wednesday for OMFS OR or clinic.
Positives: ended up matching at my #1, allowed me to get even higher CBSE with a month of dedicated studying, solid year of making real world $, more experience but different experience than non cat, learned a ton.
Negatives: some programs likely took it as a red flag that I did a year of private practice. The programs that interviewed me had me explain why I didn't do a second noncat and asked me what I would do if I didn't match...only correct answer is to do another noncat.
