What's the deal with the quote "southern programs"? why are so many of the best OMFS programs in the south? what is it about this geographical region that makes learning oral and maxillofacial surgery so great?

Because we don't care, we don't give a ****

The south has a great knife and gun club. The weather is usually warm so people are able to shoot eachother more. There are also a lot of people who get some crazy path cause the think the 10 cm expansile lesion in the mouth is not a big deal until their grill doesn't fit anymore.

I also think the west and east have LOTS of hospitals and residency programs in all specialties that fight over the face vs the population size. No data to back that up though. Just what I felt on interviews.

And the south is just plain dirty and that's good for training.

So there's just no rules and a bunch of edentulous hillbillies runnin around that are easy to catch and pop some titanium into?

"Popping some titanium" is not what the southern programs are known for.

right. big surgeries, trauma, and full scope are what they're known for. But see how you just said "the southern programs"? what is that? In all seriousness what is it about the south that allows their programs to be so strong? the warmer weather thing makes a little sense, but people are crashing cars and shooting at each other all year round up here in Detroit and Chicago. I would imagine the amount of pathology would be similar throughout the US. what else? Are all the best faculty there? where did this collective reputation of southern programs come from?

Here are a few reasons...
1.) Programs on the west coast and northeast are much more "academic" in nature. The philosphy of such are programs are that you pay your dues through didactic training and research before you even touch a pt. You'll find residents you have published numerous papers on implants, taking lots of courses, and are well in to their training before they drop their first one. The philosophy of the South is that yes, didactics and research are important, but operating experience and on the job training from the best surgeons in the country trumps just reading about operating. The question is: do want to operate or just read about operating?
2.) West/northeast programs in general seem to spend more time in medical school/general surgery than southern programs and most barely hit the required 30 months on OMS service for accredidation. Programs in the south may have up to ~40 months on OMS service.
3.). Programs in the south have less plastics/ent monopoly for facial trauma at their hospitals.
4.). Scope is generally broader in the south. In big academic west/northeast hospitals OMS is squeezed in to a strict scope.
