I applied last cycle and didn't match, so I've spent this year improving my CBSE and doing an additional externship. I know at this point a non-cat year will be expected of me and I'm prepared to do one, but I was wondering if there was a list/thread/post somewhere with information on OMF programs who are known to accept their good interns as residents. Alternatively, does anyone know of any Canadian-friendly programs like this? I'll be pursuing a non-cat year wherever I can get one regardless, but trying to improve my chances as much as possible I guess.

Thanks in advance!

A graduating D4 at my school also applied last cycle and did not match, so he’ll be doing an internship year at Penn starting this summer. He believes that his chance will vastly improve after this internship. He’s also Canadian fyi.

Any programs you intern at would want to accept an intern who demonstrates that he/she is hard-working and also pleasant (important) to work with. It's much less about where you go that increases your chance but about how you do it. Be ready to work hard and get along with other residents.

I can think of only one place that explicitly says that they will not accept their own intern.

Doing a non-cat internship is a great way to immerse yourself in OMFS, and sure, there are some places that like ranking people that have done a non-cat year. But to think that it will "vastly improve" chances of matching overall is not true. Its an uphill battle.

My friend was top 5 in his graduating class, and I think he did okay on the CBSE. I was honestly shocked that he did not match. A lot of people at my school said that it's much harder for Canadians like him.
