  1. Medical Student
i am a medical student in london. I am interested in surgery and am considereing OMFS or craniofacial surgery as a specialty. Over here i need both a medical and dental degree. what is the system in the US and do i need to take the usmles and a dental version to apply there?

In Manchester for some reason our max fax people only have dental degrees so I guess you don't always need to do both.

As I understand the 'new' system, within OMFS you can be an oral surgeon with a dental degree, a facial surgeon with a medical degree but to be 'proper' OMFS (which is what we all know as maxfax) you need both.

(I think)

I always thought you needed both but at at least 1 of our 4 major teaching hospitals at least some of the max fax lot only have dental degrees but are full max fax. It's pretty bad actually, the younger ones wont accept certain patients because they don't have the training to deal with loads of situations.
