FA says omphalocele and gastroschisis are caused by failure of lateral fold closure.
The midgut normally herniates into the umbilical cord to develop since there's not enough space in the abdominal cavity. This is normal. But it should retract back into the abdominal cavity later. If it doesn't, that's omphalocele. I just don't understand why FA lists it as caused by lateral fold closure failure. I get why gastroschisis is.

Gastroschisis is a failure of the lateral folds to fuse together resulting in an anterior abdominal wall defect. The bowel herniates through this opening in the wall typically lateral to the umbilicus.

Omphalocele is a failure of the midgut to return back into the abdominal cavity from the umbilical cord. It has nothing to do with the lateral folds of the anterior abdominal wall. There must be a typo in first aid.
Cool thanks 😀
Do you think, instead of lateral fold closure failure causing omphalocele, that omphalocele can cause lateral fold closure failure? If so, maybe that's what they meant.
