hello ,

i heart that tufts dental school would accept forgein trained dentists into their 4 year OMS program . is this true ?
university of peurto rico does as well. are there any dentist here in the forum who have been accepted this way? or is this just a rumor ?

thanks !

i think that info is correct. there are also residency positions in County hospitals for OMS Internship ,and FTD can apply, you will be paid as a first year resident. Most people that cant get a residency spot just accept that choice in the hope that they get a spot in the next cycle. Its tough because you are competing against DDS holders who are American Citizens. I spoke to an OMS program director in Texas, he told me its possible, but a tough competition, surprisingly you dont need a Part 2 for it.........alot of people dont know. His only reservation is that you cant go far with just an internship, you will still need a DDS in the long run.

hope this helps!

county hospitals ? intersting... and how do u ask for asmission ?

lets say u get into a 4 oms residency without an US dds or dmd.
what happends next after having finished the oms residency ?
are then allowed to pratice ? or do u have to do dental school for liccience ?

Most County hospitals are attached to a University Hospital system.the OMS dept has a program director which works in liason with the Univeristy system and OMS residents. As part of the curriculum the residents do rotations both with medical students and internal OMS rotations and at the end get a Certificate. With that certificate you can apply for a state license to practice. You are still a BDS holder but with an american certificate in OMS.

The OMS group in the Dental complex where i work has a Mexican FTD who did the program in puerto rico i guess, she works in Texas now as part of an OMS group, she was already an OMS consultant in Mexico, she wasnt interested in doing advanced placement,so went ahead and did an OMS residency but wrote the NBDE 1 and 2, she is doing very fine. Its a very tough process where you need a lot of good referees fighting your case. Its real, very possible but extremely competitive.

It is true about Tufts. But you have to have some saved money. Because as FTD they are not gonna pay you and you have to pay for tuition fees about $12.000/year, plus insurance, living expenses etc. It comes up minimum $32.000/year out of your pocket as a foreigner. In past 8 yeras there have been 3 FTDs accepted, 1 from saudi arabia - strong research in US, 2- form India-work experience in England, both females, and last one is a guy from greece. I do not not how he could get in but probably because the program director is greek origin and some connections through his uncle (probably, thats what I have heard). Still chances are very slim for foreigners, believe me or not. I have pretty strong background, and I had interview there last year but did not get in. Other schools that will consider FTDs for OMS is Boston University, Carle Clinic, Some programs in Chicago and Texas. Better way is going 2 years for advanced standing and better chances than. You can try, but I would call it waste of money, time and effort.

slapa, if one went the advanced standing route, would the oms residency pay? Or does this depend on visa status?

You are very correct. Yeah........the easiest way is Advanced standing,...........no shortcuts!!!!!.

Tufts is the only exception if you are on student visa, they do not pay you. After advanced standing you can apply to much more programs, and you are more close to the level of US graduates. Second thing is green card, if you have it, advantage. Because many programs require GC or citizenship to apply. I do not why they do have this requirement but probably because of goverment funding.

Hi there,
I am an Indian dentist looking forward to take my Part 1 in Feb 2010 and appear for my Part 2 in May 2010.
Am looking to apply for a residency program for 2011. My Biggest Confusion is that '' Do the Residency Program accepts FTD with good part 1 score + part 2 score, without any US experiance?'' How I can improve my possibilities?
Is Advance standing= Residency Program?

My GPA 3.7
working at dentist since 2yrs in India.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME OUT....
thanks tc....

Yes, its possible...which speciality you would like?
If its OMS, then its almost impossible...
After completing any ADA accrediated >2 yrs residency you can practice in 7-8 states without DDS/DMD...
