This is something I have wondered for a while. If the journal is JOMS, and the association is the AAOMS, wherever did OMFS come from and why do some people/institutions use it instead of OMS.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery = OMS
or Oral and MaxilloFacial Surgery = OMFS

the additionnal "F" is for facial.

Both abreviations are the same thing.

I'm pretty sure the OP knows that much. 😉

To address the original question, though, I've wondered the same thing for a while now.

I think it has to do with how so many people hear 'oral surgeon' and think you do nothing but operate in the mouth...when people hear 'maxillofacial' they just think its a big word and get confused...by using omFs vs. oms it emphasizes the fact that faces are also a major part of the scope. That's my take on it.

True. same thing with otorihinolaryngologists/ ENT.

They are both the same thing.

Actually it's more in the way that ENT/oto is now using the title "Head & Neck Surgery", just to emphasize that they don't just stick to the ear, nose, and throat.
