Sorry to hear about your rejection. UC Davis is mean, I didn't know that schools could reject you via email 🙁 . The least they can do is send it through regular mail! Hang in there sdnstud.

Your mailman is on top of his game....geesh. I'm lucky if our mail comes before 4:30.

I got a hold for a "possible" interview at UCSD. Is this equivalent to a rejection and should I just write this school off?

It was through email. Hang in there sdnstud. You have a bunch of interviews already, so you're already in a better position than most.

Condolences man, but you're still the sdnstud in my forum! 😀 You'll get in somewhere better.

I really wish I could say that. But, UC Davis is really my only hope to stay close to my family (my parents not getting along lately). Yes, I know I still have Stanford and UCSF. but after 6 month+ into this application process, I'm starting to realize that I am not as good of an applicant as my numbers suggest. I'm getting interview invites from schools with averages below my numbers and those schools that have stats comparable to my numbers all gave me the heisman (rejections). Thus, living in berkeley (which I am doing now) is probably the closest I would ever get to Stanford or UCSF.

To all you prospective applicants reading this, do not take the August MCAT and apply the same year. Doing so will just kill your chance of getting into schools that are at your level. I have a 3.8gpa, 33mcat, very good EC, and a professionally edited PS, and I will likely end up at a school that has an average gpa of 3.5 and mcat 28.

Don't be too hard on yourself. If you're getting other interviews, its because you are a good applicant, you just have to find the right fit for you. I went to UC Davis for my undergrad and have been preparing myself for UCD med for many years now and when I got rejected, I was heartbroken. It feels horrible to get rejected, especially from somewhere so important, but life has a way of putting you exactly where you need to be. I'm sorry! 🙁

If this really bothers you this much, then maybe you should think about withdrawing and re-applying next year on time so you can get into a school of better caliber (maybe even UC Davis and stay close to home!). Don't go to a med school and then be bitter and regretful about it, always wondering whether you could've gone somewhere better if you'd applied again. Live life without regrets 🙂

The way I viewed the August MCAT is this:
I could've taken it in April when I had classes, but then I probably would not have done as well as I could have in August. You're right in that the August MCAT meant that our applications are late. But, this shouldn't be shocking news to any August MCAT-er. The August MCAT wasn't designed for application that same year, it was designed for application the following year. I decided to take the risk and apply this year instead of waiting (even though the odds are stacked against us), because I see this as an opportunity for us to start med school one year earlier. You get to save a year of your life - you can't really put a price on that. 🙂

sdnstud, I don't think that taking the MCAT in August is what got you axed. A lot of overqualified applicants were rejected by Davis. I was told by someone who "knows" stuff that I was rejected because Davis assumed that I would pick somewhere else. I was also told to write an appeal if I seriously wanted to interview there. I didn't go through with it because I got into schools that I would pick over Davis, but it's worth a shot! For what it's worth, besides the Davis rejection, I'm on hold at Irvine and San Diego, but have interviewed at UCLA and UCSF. I think it's definitely possible that SF will work out for you (were you asked to submit a secondary?). Good luck!

p.s. besides. you haven't heard from a lot of schools yet based on your profile. the angst is premature 🙂 . keep your chin up. ther'es hope yet!!!

well i hope this is true; im getting pretty worried now too since ive got pretty similar stats and good research/ec from Cal too and applied late; i normally dont get worked up but ive found it hard waiting to hear so long; keep refreshing my email; if i wasnt working full time id be a wreck!

They didn't even have the time to type you up a proper snail mail letter?

I'm sorry sdnstud. Cheer up. There are many more schools that you haven't heard back from. I'm sure things will work out.

I would recommend to them that they send out rejections via snail mail. Honestly, email just isn't formal enough. An applicant spent time (and money) to fill out their application. The least they could do is send a letter. 🙄

...another child support request.

This post seems like it should be in the Official Homo Premed Thread.

my power bill -- almost as bad as a rejection.

The thin letter from UCSF 👎 and an interview hold at UCSD so I guess it evens out! 🙂

Being on hold for interview at UCSD is not a good thing. 🙁 I have been on hold since September. It's like a pre-interview waitlist, of sorts.

Sorry sdnstud! Don't be so hard on yourself though. You are going to get in somewhere, but like another person posted, if that's not good enough then appeal or wait until next year and apply again. I have read posts where people appealed and did get interviews because of it. But I'd do it right away. You don't want it to look like an afterthought. If you're that serious they may reconsider you. I wish you the best, and I hope you feel better.
