Hi all, I wanted to take an informal survey regarding exams and quizes at different schools.

1.Are any schools allowing "on line" exams. If so how are they controlling security issues such as googling for the answers?

2. How long does it take from the time you take your exam until you get your results, 1 day, 1 week or longer. Currently it may be 3 weeks before we get our results.

I am trying to propose some changes at our school but need some hard data from others to support my point. I believe "on line" exams could be possible with some monitoring. Anyway, anyone willing to provide feedback please e-mail me directly if possible. Thanks, Regina

1. Our school does not have any online exams or quizzes.

2. Results can vary depending on the type of exam. For multiple choice scantron exams, we get the results back on average 3 days. For anything that had a written portion that had to be graded by hand, usually you are looking at 1-2 weeks depending how much there was to grade. Everything is posted in an online gradebook through the university.

1. Really no online exams or quizzes. In my two years here, I've only had one online quiz, and the prof knew we were going to use our notes.

2. The length of time does vary. It has to do with how busy the UIC grading services are for scantron. It's taken as little as 3 days and as many as about one week.
For free response, as little as 5 hours and as long as one week.

1. We take most of our exams online. They are given to us during class time (or at another specified time that is proctored) and we use a secured browser that ensures all other programs are not running and that they can not be accessed.

2. We get our results immediately, or after a week or two if there are essay questions.

Sorry - no personal experience - I've been out of school too long.

But - my daughter is in medical school at Wake Forest - all their exams are online (except the anatomy practical). Its a great system actually - the exam is available at a certain time, once they log in they have to complete the exam - they can't log back out & in again. It is timed - not by the login time, but by the time the exam is available. It is available (for the most part) only at school - they have had a few which were clinical exams which could be done at home or wherever... There is a feature where you can make a comment about each question as you take it....so it allows the professor to see what students have to say (about a poorly worded questions for example).

There is also a feature where you can flag a question if you're not sure or want to come back to it, which, she says is easy to see. When you are done, before you log out, it tells you what questions you haven't answered & what questions you've flagged & haven't removed the flag. So you don't run into missing a question. Once you've verified you're done & log out - you can't go back.

They use a secured browser. Sometimes the scores are immediate. However, in her school, most exams have each question evaluated by not just the professor of the "block" but also by the individual who taught that lecture (there are many lecturers for each block).

Hope this gives you another perspective......

1. all exams have been online so far, we also use a secure browser

2. we get our scores back the same day

Hi thanks for responding to my survey. Can you tell me how the secure browser works. Do the students use their own PC's or is it a computer lab situation? Thanks, Regina

For one of my classes, all of our grades come from about 10 online tests through WebCT. The test is made available at 9:15PM and closes at 9:30PM on a particular day. Everyone must log in and keep refreshing the page until it's made available. Once we click on an answer the page automatically goes to the next question... we can't change it or go to previous questions. We can't leave a question blank and go forward either unless we want 0 credit for that question. I guess this prevents people from finishing with a few minutes to spare and calling up their friends asking "Is this the answer for such and such?" Question order is randomized and it seems like there's a decent size question bank each test. The exam results are instant though. Whereas results from exams oncampus take 2 weeks to get back to us.

oh and btw.. I hate this format. 😉 Any misclick and you're screwed. If your internet connection craps out, you're screwed. If a professor decides to put a bitmap on a question (this happened recently), it takes a couple minutes for it to load... taking away precious time for future questions, and you're screwed. If a group of students have weekly LAN parties for the test, they do fine and everyone else is screwed.

I go to Pacific University, and we all have our own laptops. On test days the test becomes available at 8:00 am, we log on to webct through our secure browser which prevents us from opening any other applications. We can go back and change answers or leave them blank to answer later, but we take our tests in the classroom. We receive our scores and go over the test the same day.

UB has a fair share of online quizes. Most of them are quizes about the drugs used for each section in therapeutics. Like, well have neruology and the online quiz will be on that. They are designed that we HAVE to use references to answer them and they are a way to expose us to different drugs. We get scores immediately. It is done through blackboard

Wow, I wish more schools would transition to doing tests online. At my school it takes anywhere from a week to a month (yes, even for scantron-only tests) to get results back.
