Recently, I have noticed that there are several Spine Programs "popping up". For example, University of Michigan, VCU, and UCLA. These programs are generally non-ACGME accredited but are located at the same places where ACGME Pain Programs are offered.

I was wondering if perhaps these programs were being started to take over some of the "leftover" procedures that the pain fellows were not getting? If that is the case, that would not be a good thing - doing the same thing as the pain fellows, but not getting the ACGME recognition.

Of course, ACGME is not everything as has been debated ad nauseum on this board. And if these new Spine Fellowships are actually offering additional things like EMG exposure and spine specific training, then I suppose it is fine.

Does anyone have any input on this or know about any of these new programs? What do you think the training is going to be like? Also, does anyone know if these programs are PASSOR accredited?

Thanks for the input.

Cup half full, cup half empty. There are pros and cons. FWIW I think Michigan's program will be a VERY strong program, with better clinical experience than some ACGME accredited ones. PM me if you have any specific questions. 😆
