Once commitment is over, do you go academic or private practice?

This post is mostly to get some info from milmd and navysurgeon.

Now that you have finished your time in the Navy, how did you decide between going into private practe vs. academics. To me it seems like practicing in the Navy is more like an academic practice, where there are residents to train. Did you guys enjoy working in this setting?

If you opted for private practice, obviously the money is going to be much better. But what are the other benefits/detriments of private practice as compared to academics?
