I am finishing a case report in oncology and am trying to figure out the options of journals I could submit to. Its a case report related to chemo drug toxicity and an interesting clinical manifestation after administration of a drug in an onc patient. Any suggestions or ideas? I'm not sure where to start...

I'd actually submit to a meeting actually - as an oral presentation, not a poster, looks better on the CV. Not many journals are accepting case reports these days, especially since almost everything has been reported once.

The pharmacy literature might take it.

A meeting is a good idea...a regional ACP or state oncology society meeting would be best. If it's a truly unique and unreported toxicity, a pharm journal or one of the myriad throwaway Onc journals (I get about 15 different ones a month) would possibly take it. There are also a bunch of online-only journals that might be a way to go.

If you really want to publish in a real journal though, you'll need to come up with some sort of molecularly proven physiologic explanation for the toxicity, a pathologic correlate or an associated literature review.

really? this is definitely the first case reported in the literature though....

hmm my advisor is expecting to publish it and i've already written it up so I was hoping to submit it somewhere. What are some that accept case reports?

Any names of these journals?

As I've received throwaways over the past week (at least one a day), I've checked to see if they take case reports. So far, most of them are newsletters, not actual journals.

The two actual "journals" I've received in that time are "The Oncologist" (which is actually half-decent) and "Community Oncology" which is an Elsevier imprint (Corporate motto - "We'll publish anything for the right page charge.") The most recent "Oncologist" did not have any case reports in it although I've seen them before. Community Oncology did have (rather pedestrian) one in it.

If it's a straight-up drug toxicity, talk to the Onc pharmacist (yes, there is one there) about where s/he thinks it would be good to send it. Then ask your attending if s/he has any good ideas. "Submit it for publication" is not helpful information, especially for a student. "See about submitting it to the Journal of X or Y Journal" is much better.
