I noticed that many med schools only give you 10-14 days to accept an offer of admission. Considering how far apart the interviews and acceptance letters can be, can't that really mess you up?

For example, what if you end up interviewing early at one med school and receive an acceptance letter there before you've heard back from the other schools you're waiting to hear back from? Are you basically left to choose between telling them yes and going there or having to decline their acceptance so you can wait for your other schools' responses?

I assume you can't send a letter of intent to matriculate and then later change your mind because you got into a better school. How does this work?

You can hold multiple acceptances and until a certain date in May, after which you must choose and hold only one acceptance.

yup. and most (if not all) schools that require you to send some sort of deposit will refund it come may. so, unless you're sure you don't want to go there, accept those spots for now. (i should add, though, AS SOON AS you know you will not be going somewhere, withdraw... let someone else have that spot sooner rather than later.)

Word. Anything less would be uncivilized.

Alexander, the thing that confuses everyone is the following. You can hold as many acceptances as you wish until May 15th. At that time you must withdraw from all of the programs except one. After that, you can still get off the waitlist at a place you are waitlisted and go to that school.

As for letters of intent, there's no system but the honor system in place. The idea is that you send a letter if you are waitlisted or waiting forever for an admissions decision telling them that you'd definately come there if accepted. If you welch on that or do it to more than one school, it's just morally wrong. Though, it is possible that you could be found out due to the communication of adcoms.
