Oops! Secondary essay blunder!

I was rereading my essay for a particular school, and with much horror and chagrin, I realized I had used the word "tenants" where I had meant "tenets"! Am I now doomed and forever excommunicated from possibly receiving an interview at this school? 😳

Funny you should mention the secondary...I was looking at the admissions process sheet that they give student interviewers and saw that the secondary app and essays are (as you imply) used to help determine interviews. However, I do not believe that your essay put you into the reject pile. That being said, if you were already a mental midget and happened to get a 17C (I know it doesn't go that low for the essay) on the MCAT, this late in the interview cycle, well...

Oh, by the way, I have never even seen a secondary essay. Our file for interviewers does not contain the secondary.

IMHO, I think you will be just fine. If you think about it, each interviewer has to look over the files of many different applicants. If one were to play solely on probability, 1-2 errors (if they are not gross errors) will most likely go unnoticed.

Now I am not saying that mistakes can't hurt you, I have a friend with pretty good overall application, but he did not spend proper time revising/developing his personal statement and he does not have a single interview.

In your case, I would believe that a stressed out/rushed/overtired interviewer
would most likely not make the distinction between the occupant of a dwelling vs. a principle/belief/doctrine. So, relax. I would not worry if I were you.

Don't sweat it. I messed up when using a health care acronym on the primary. No big deal. I believe as long as it is a word that the reader could easily see themselves doing it'll slide by.

A worse one was the doctor I shadowed actually misspelled MEDICINE in her letter of support ahaha. It didn't have an impact on my applications, as far as I know.

I read over my secondary essay for NYCOM about 6 times. still missed a typo. Spell check can be really worthless sometimes.

When proofreading an essay or any written assignment, try reading it backwards. For example, lets say you were proofing a sentence - read the last word first... that is, read the sentences backwards. That way your brain won't associate and fix it automatically and you'll be alerted to your error.

And everyone makes mistakes. I wouldn't worry about one spelling mistake that much. Good luck! 😛
