OK, spare me the lecture on managing finances... my husband has been unemployed for 6 months and we have been surviving on my grad assistantship stipend (I'm in a master's program), so money has been very tight.

Anyway, two of the checks that I wrote for application fees have bounced. What should I do? Just call the schools and explain? Has this ever happened to anyone before? The deadlines are on Dec 1.

If two checks have bounced they might want to see cash or a money order for the third attempt.

I would just call the admin office of the places where the checks bounced, honestly explain what happened (it can't be the first time they've seen this!) and ask them how they'd like you to pay (and be ready to pay with a card on the spot, if possible).
