Hey all! First time poster, long time thread reader. I am curious about getting into out of state residencies. I currently am an OMS I at OSU-CHS. But, I am not interested in remaining in OK after my fours years of school (I grew up in OK and I want to try living and working somewhere else). I would prefer to go somewhere that is a larger city, like Chicago or another city that is involved with an osteopathic school. Basically, I am just curious how I might be able to achieve this goal. I know that going from undergrad to professional school, you had to have significantly higher scores and GPA. Is this still the case with going from med school into residency? Should I try and do some shadowing next summer in those places that I would like to get a residency? If anyone can help me out with this process that would be incredible. Thanks!

Yes, your board scores, letters of recommendations from attending on your rotations, and your rotation grades matter when applying for residency.

You can definitely get a residency in those cities if you rotate there in your 3rd and early 4th year. Impress the attendings and residents in the hospital you rotate at, apply to that residency, go to the interview, and hope to match.

Do rotations where you would to to potentially apply to for residency. Do very well there - be on time, don't disappear, if they tell you to go home don't hang aroung (it's annoying). Don't irritate anyone, etc.

Nobody wants to take on an irritating person for 3+ years of residency. Just remember that.

When we were choosing new recruits we picked those who got along on rotations, we didn't have to hunt down who maybe had lower board scores then that 99% guy who nobody could stand.

Try to be well rounded, look professionsal, get along, study, and BE ON TIME for lectures.
