Dear fellow docs,
As the title suggests, open access is the burning issue all over Internet.I am happy for Public Library of Science to have launched PLoS medicine.
www.plosmedicine.org
Its strange that public funds are taken for research and the same information is blocked in the name of access. For people who cannot afford the updated information, thats plain discrimination. It takes time for a journal to reach the stature of NEJM or JAMA.However, the delayed 6 month period as offered by both journals is not suffice. What of those medical students(like me)who dont have access to institutional subscriptions?
Further,Evidence based medicine is one hot topic that promises to revolutionise the health care delivery.British Medical Journal has carried out extensive articles on the same in this month.
www.bmj.com If possible please register for the webchat on the same on Nov.4th 2004.
Ideally, healthcare information should be free minus the access fee or institutional access. However,we live in unfortuante times with few people having a stranglehold over the way information flows.Health care budgets of several governments simply donot priortise the information access or retrieval.
Please make this forum active as to how open access be established. One way is to email the concerned people and tell them that there are a lot of people who wouldnt care for the advertisements,as long as the content is free.More number of people and better chance we have to make ourselves heard. This post is waiting for any other ideas.
Regards to one and all.
