I was asked to pass this on:

For the Canadians on the board or anyone considering a cross-border move who loves lakes, mountains and rivers, there is an AP/CP opening in beautiful Cranbrook, southern British Columbia due to retirement at East Kootenay Regional Hospital (2-person group). The retiring pathologist will remain in the area so arranging for locum coverage during vacation is not a problem.

8,000 surgical accessions/year, 50 bone marrows, clinical pathology consultation, cytology and approximately 75 autopsies (both coroner and hospital -- you would not have to take on the coroner workload if you didn't want to).

http://betterhere.ca/pathology/permanent/cranbrook.htm

  • Compensation is over C$350,000 at current levels, adjusted to meet inflation -- plus all kinds of rural retention bonuses (14% Retention Premium, $12,240 Retention Flat-Fee and $10,000 Recruitment Incentive. Relocation costs covered up to $10,000, or $15,000 if relocating >3,000 km.) The Canadian dollar is at parity.
  • At least 8 weeks vacation and CME.
  • CMPA membership (malpractice coverage) is required to obtain hospital privileges, and current costs for a pathologist in B.C. are about C$2200 dollars/year.
From my experience, issues regarding working in Canada:
- For licensure, you would need to have 5 years of training because path training in Canada is 5 years.
- American Board of Pathology AP/CP certification required unless you have Royal College certification.
- Work permits can be approved within about 2 months of the time of application to Service Canada, if the applicant does not have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status.

This is a pretty good opportunity:
