Guys, here's a link to some great practice management articles by J. Pinto and Assoc geared towards the ophthalmic market.

I'm fascinated by this kind of stuff! I'd love to hear what some of the attendings on here think...

Check out the article titled "The Ophthalmic Personality." Lengthy but an interesting read!

Take what you read from Mr. Pinto with a grain of salt. He has a lot of useful insights when he talks about what he seems to know best, optimizing middle to larger group practices' performance. But I am not as convinced he is on firm ground when he goes afield of that, trying to draw larger conclusions about the economy or the post-election healthcare climate, all from the relatively insignificant perspective of the ophthalmology community. His Cassandra-like predictions of eight years ago still haven't come to pass.

What irritates me most about Mr. Pinto is his expression of general disdain for large segments of the ophthalmic practice community, the doctors who practice solo or who choose to work for institutional employers. I can understand that these practitioners are not those who cough up the big bucks for his consulting services--only large, high-volume, high-revenue practices could afford his services--but that is not a reason to hold these doctors in low regard. You can sense his frustration that these doctors just aren't "getting it" and forming big groups that can afford nationally-based consultant fees among other things that big organizations can buy. Sorry, when his self-interest so obviously shows through, I can't help but hold suspect the quality of his advice. He seems anymore to be a counselor to a passing generation, more of a wealth management guru to older ophthalmologists. I really don't see him giving much advice that a junior ophthalmologist could use; he seems more in tune with the senior doctors who would be looking to employ that junior doctor, all furnished by amassed practice assets earned by cataract fees no longer available anywhere.
