Does anyone have any experience with any ophthalmology recruiting businesses? if so, which one did you use? would you re commend using one? did it cost anything? any information would be valuable!

I'm a pgy-2 (almost about to begin doing cataract surgery !!!) and would like to potentially use one of these groups to assist me in finding a job. I do not have a geographic location that I am isolated too, thus, I would believe it could help me out.

The best jobs available don't go through recruiters. Be careful a lot of those jobs that use recruiters are mills with people coming and going. It doesn't cost you anything though.
 
Having been in the recruitment industry for over 18 years, I can say that not all of the best jobs don't use recruiters. I have many clients who choose to utilize my services for different reasons. Some don't want to be bothered with the process, others would like me to screen candidates for the position.

I have seen several folks accept terrible positions from word of mouth and recommendations of colleagues.

Either way, it is best to do your own due diligence on any practice prior to joining them, no matter how you found the position.

And yes, my services are free to those searching for a position so it is almost crazy not to contact someone to assist you in your search.

Services are free to you as an applicant but not free. The hiring practice pays a fee. The recruiter is thus working for them, not you. Though it's in their best interest to make a good match for reputation purposes, they are more interested in keeping the practice happy more than you from a financial perspective. As such, I was very wary of recruiters and practices that used them.

Ultimately there are pros and cons to their services and doing your due diligence becomes even more critical when using a recruiter.

I agree. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Although the practice is footing the bill for a recruiter, it's probably indirectly coming out of your pocket in the form of lower starting salary, bonus or benefits.
