Hello everyone,
I am in a real dilemma about what to do regarding the following:
I am planning to start pharmacy school this Aug but I now know that I would need to skip the Spring semester 2005 due to unavoidable circumstances.
If I do that, then I would have to wait a year to start again because my school only offers those classes once a year. (it's a 4 yr school only admitting students in Fall).
On the other hand I could ask for a deferral (talked to the Dean and she said I had a valid reason.) and start in Fall 05 instead of this year.

My question is: What do you all think to be the best course of action? Do this semester and sit out the next year or start in Fall 05?
Also, even if I am offered a guaranteed spot in next years class is it possible that they might change their minds?
I would really appreciate any input because I am at a loss at what to do since this is completely unexpected.
Thanks

I say if the deferral goes through and there's a valid reason, start next year (fall 05). It's just nice to stick with your class through those 3 pre-clinical years because there will be new faces when you come back for year 2 and there's that little adjustment (not a BIG deal though). If a deferral is granted, then I believe that that's a guaranteed spot and they can't take that away from you. But it's totally up to you. The question is, do you want a break this Fall or next Fall? Just my thoughts and opinions.

Each school has their own process when it comes to deferral. I don't know if it's a general process with each school or if it depends on a student's individual circumstances. I know a guy who deferred at UT in 2002 and the process wasn't as simple as him having a guarenteed seat in the fall 2003 class. If I recall correctly he said that UT wasn't guarenteeing him a seat, but UH was. Needless to say he ended up at UH.
Good luck, and if I remember correctly as to what your circumstance is, congratulations.

If your deferral is guaranteed, I think you should definitely wait until Fall '05. You really need to take care of yourself during this time, and I don't think that the stress and sleepless nights studying will be very good for you. Of course it can be done, but must it be done? I'll PM you more of what happened in my situation, and then you can seriously think about it. 🙂
