I know for internal medicine, Duke >> Pitt. But what about Neurology? Both places seemed equally busy and had similar feels, so I'll likely choose based on reputation. I do think both places match to fellowships equally well.

Nor from my experience at U Pitt in either IM or Neurology:

But then you have your own opinions.........

Did you go to Pitt for med school or residency? One thing that impresses me about UPMC is how fast they have become a top 20 institution (and they make no secret that they are aiming to become top 10 in the near future). However, stuff like perceived reputation among medical colleagues and the general public still matters, and in that, I think Duke has an edge.

Perception doesnt mean facts & it certainly doesnt result in good training.
As you can see from the rankings, Duke is quite behind UPMC in Publications in peer reviewed journals, highly cited articles & in the level of its alumni. These parameters reflect the kind of training you can expect the each institution as well as the opportunities for research as a resident & fellow. I have been following these rankings since 2007 & UPMC has consistently scored above Duke. Since these are non-US (hence relatively independent of biases), grade clinical medicine & are ranking according to research output & what the alumni are doing in future, they are quite objective for grading institutions, unlike the US News & World Report.

If you do have objective evidence to back your point of view that Duke is better than UPMC in medical sciences, please put it up to convince me.

At the end of the day, medical students should be going to the program they think they will fit into & will give them the best training.

Does anyone else have any input aside from Fencer and Bonran?

I just have to put in my two cents about Duke..I interviewed all over, at some of the top programs in the country for Neurology, and that program is amazing. I can't compare it to Pitt because I didn't interview or really even research the program, but I can tell you from my personal experience that the residents and faculty at Duke are amazing. The program director is phenomenal, the faculty is top notch and are on the cutting edge of research (I kind of tested them during my interview to see haha), and there isn't a friendlier, more intelligent group of residents that I met on all my interviews. I honestly don't think I'll match there because I know they get the top-tier applicants (and I'm not an MD/PhD), but I have to promote that program - it's outstanding.
