Any MCP students care to share their opinion of the school? I'm choosing between MCP and a SUNY school and am wondering if MCP is worth the extra dough.

Well, I think MCP is at least as good as any SUNY school, but as I enter 4th year with tons of debt, unless your parents are paying for it, I'd take your state school. The match lists are virtually identical, except for the obvious regional differences in placement (more PA vs. more NY). Actually, I would advise state school over private for all but the elite schools in the US...it's just not worth the $$.

Incidentally, here's an article from today's (4/21) Philadelphia Inquirer...the merger will be approved this week, so it'll be Drexel University's MCP Hahnemann College of Medicine as of July 1st. Probably we'll just be referred to as "Drexel" by the populace after a short adjustment period.

Thanks for the advice and the article Jack.

does it even make sense to call it Drexel Univ's MCP Hahnmemann College of Medicine? Doesn't MCP stand for Medical College of Pennsylvania???

THEREFORE it would be...
Drexel University's MEDICAL COLLEGE of Pennsylvania Hahnemann COLLEGE OF MEDICINE... THAT would be embarassing.

When the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University merged, the Medical College of Pennsylvania was shortened to MCP. Technically, in MCP-Hahnemann University, the MCP does not stand for anything and it still won't even when it is the Drexel University MCP-Hahnemann College of Medicine.

mpp

i see what you're saying... but we all KNOW that it stands for Med College of PA... you don't just throw three letters into a name for no reason- it has to come from somewhere! Just b/c everybody calls the Lakers, the "LA Lakers" doesn't make it okay to call them the "LA Lakers of Los Angeles"

Just because it's true doesn't mean it has to make any sense.

I remember back when the Jets moved from Shea Stadium to Giants Stadium in New Jersey, they were going to change the name to New Jersey Jets. Lots of complaints of course...so then for a while the official name of the Jets was NY Jets in which the NY did not mean anything but of course everyone knew what it meant. That quickly changed again and now they are officially the New York Jets...that play in Giants Stadium...in New Jersey.

Hey which SUNY school?
This year's match list at SUNY Upstate is pretty impressive (if an impressive match list is based on how many people are going into competetive specialties  ). Two people are going into derm, three are going into opthalmology, four into ENT, thirteen into radiology, seven into orthopedic surgery. If I come across the entire match list of where people are going to I can send you a copy.

Guardian,
I actually have a paper copy of the entire matchlist. Student Affairs sent me a copy per my request. Let me know if you have any questions about the list.

That's all right. Thanks for the tip off. I requested the match list from 1999 and 2000 during last summer but with all that has happened since forgot which office <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> .

With regards to the new name...it is also very possible that the new name will simply be the "Drexel University College of Medicine". In fact a very recent email said that this was the "working name" of the med school until the name will be finalized, when this issue will be voted on by the Drexel board of trustees before July 1st.

jackjinju: will you be going to mcp too?

Hi,

Actually I'm a student here. I'm finishing up my third-year, and will start my fourth-year in around a month (thank God).

hey jackjinju: i'm waitlisted there and dying to get in! would you happen to know anything about the waitlist? how big it is? how many get in? any info would be appreciated. thanks!

I wish I could help, but I'm kind of out of that loop at the moment. I think there's a thread on the topic though, in the premed section.

Hi, as far as the waitlist it's a ranked system, and should be moving fast during the summer. I have freinds who got off the list a couple days before school started. Hope this helps
