Hi everyone,

I'm applying for my 4th (and probably last) time to vet school. i'm disappointed it has taken me this long to get in...but i'm hoping this time will do it. i know my grades haven't been as strong, but they're not *horrible* in my opinion, and i have a lot of great experience. what do you think:

-cumulative undergrad GPA: 3.38
-GRE score: 1000
-cumulative grad school GPA: 3.83

experience:
-worked from 2001 - 2008 at 2 different vet clinics - 1 small animal, 1 mixed practice
-did summer internship at a research lab at UC Davis
-worked on projects with vet professors i met through my grad program (the profs teach in my grad program and at msu's vet school)
-have done shadowing/volunteering at a zoo, a bird clinic, and other vet clinics
-went on study abroad to Kenya to study african mammals
-worked on a farm from april 2009 - april 2010
-worked at U of M research lab from november 2008 - january 2009
-have been involved in community bands playing percussion (helps me be well-rounded)

the only thing msu has been able to tell me is that my gre and undergrad gpa is low, so i enrolled in grad school to help with my gpa and have been doing really well. i've taken the gre 3 times and 1000 is the best i've been able to do and i'm tired of that dang test!!! any other insights would be appreciated!!

Your experiences are excellent.

What are your individual GRE scores? Verbal is typically less important than Quant for admissions. Your GRE is low, but if it's high quant low verbal, you might be better off than if it was unilaterally low.

What's your sGPA (science prereqs) and last 45 GPA? Also, some schools may still put more weight on undergrad grades than grad grades.

With that GPA and GRE, Michigan State (Is this the MSU you're referring to?) is going to be unlikely, as they don't interview and so are going solely on numbers. I'd try applying to a few other schools that interview and have less focus on numbers.

Where have you applied during the last 3 cycles? Personally, I think your experience sounds pretty diverse and, while your GRE/undergrad stats are a little on the low side, it's surprising that you've only been able to get that much feedback on why you are not getting in.

I think it would be a good idea to take the GRE again...yes it sucks...but how much do you want to get in?

How far along are you in your grad program? If you cannot finish the program before vet school would start next year vet schools will not like that as you are implying you will drop out of the grad program if you get into vet school.

Don't give up. You just haven't found the right school yet. I would take a GRE prep course and try to get that GRE up as high as possible. Every little bit helps. Perhaps write an explanation for the lower GPA.

Additionally, maybe change one of your evaluators or all of them and think about applying to a school you have not previously applied to in the past.

If this is what you want in life, truly want - then don't ever give up. You just need to find the place you belong. Have faith in yourself and you will make it.
🙂

Can I say that your perseverance is truly admirable? Gosh, and while your gpa and gre scores are slightly below average, your experience is diverse and remarkable.

Do you mind my asking where you've applied the past 3 cycles? Have you given any thought to Caribbean schools? They seem to place more emphasis on experience than straight-up stats and you seem like a shoo-in.

Good luck this cycle!

I think you need to re-take the GRE. Other than that your stats look fine.

I too am wondering where you applied, your experience is diverse, your GPA is comparable to many from the successful applicants thread, the only thing is your GRE. Honestly I'd suck it up, study as much as you can and just take it one more time. Also if you're just sick of waiting and you REALLY want this then my best advice is just take the GRE again and maybe apply to all the caribbean schools (everyone says they do more of an evaluation of the applicant as a whole and not just GPA and GRE). Like somebody else mentioned, if you give us a few more details we might be able to better help you. In the meantime, good luck and don't give up on your dreams!
