Can anyone with any information about the Perio-Pros and Pros Programs at UPenn explain the benefits and disadvantages of these programs?

Expensive. Expensive and Expensive. The only benefit I can see for Perio-Prosth is understanding more of the restorative aspect. You will only be able to receive referrals for perio reasons because it is not a dual program; it is just a "pat on the bat certificate" for prosth. Are you a foreign dental professional/student?

Pros is good if you want to go into academics but again very expensive program at Upenn

Did you attend the program or have friends who have attended the program? I am Canadian. From what I heard those with that degree end up having practices focused on prosthodontics even though they have the specialization in Perio. Would that be correct?

I know of a guy that went through the perio-prosth program. You don't get specialty certification for pros this way; you get it for perio. He is practicing as a periodontist in Chicago.

I would imagine he understands the restorative process better when treatment planning for implants but it is not worth $400k at 9% interest rate. He was a GP for 10 years before he did it.

Does he restore any of his own implants as well? Reason I'm asking is I am looking for a program that will allow me to place and restore my own large implant cases. Since we're here what do you think of the prosthodontics specialty and long-term prospects/cost-benefit for specialization?

He does not or else he wouldn't get referrals. That is a great question. If you want a referral based practice then go either perio or prosth. If you want to place and restore your own you can go two ways 1) Prosth that is surgically heavy and then market yourself against GP 2) AEGD surgical heavy and be a GP.

You dont think it would be possible to get referrals for more complex surgical/prostho cases? Which prosthodontic programs are surgically heavy?

Honestly I don’t know anything about prosth programs. But research them...

No the GP is going to want to do the restorative aspects of the treatment. GPs only refer things that they don’t want to do or can’t do. Many can do sound restorative treatments with implants. They refer surgery, endo that’s impossible, kids that take too much time, and things that they don’t want to deal with. A denture for an all on 4 is money and not to complex to restore.
