If you do a search in both this forum and the dental one, you'll find lots of good info from students. I'm a student there, and very happy. Here's the summary I usually give for the question:
Pros:
--Very friendly and helpful administration. They knew my name from the first day I showed up, and will help you with anything you need. They've even hired a full-time therapist just for dental students! Not to mention academic help, finan. aid, etc. etc.
--I'm a huge fan of the city...it's big enough to have culture and resources, but small enough to feel like a community (there are whole threads about this)
--You get your own chair in the clinic! No waiting in line with a patient, just to get a broken chair
--Curriculum runs smoothly....no last-minute classes thrown together, you know what will happen when...no huge changes just to try something new out. Very few burnt out profs...they seem to like teaching
--More than enough experience in preclin to get to clinic, and in clinic to get into practice...you get so much that you're sick of it!
--Great campus...there are a few other grad programs there, so there are non-dental students (unlike many d-schools in the middle of a city), and it's on the old campus with nice marble buildings
--Chances to minor in dental specialties and get really involved in the community
--Easy to get around the school and the city
--VERY inexpensive, and you can become a New York resident after 1 year
--Cost of living in Buffalo...apartments are usually around $350-450!
Cons
--Parking...once the undergrads start classes there, all the spaces fill up (but you can live within walking distance)
--The students are pretty formal and upright...don't know how this compares to other schools. But there are many married students and a lot are more settled than those I've seen in party cities
--If you don't like snow, it will snow. But it's pretty similar to anywhere else in the northeast....only weird if you're from a warm climate
--No windows in preclin lab (though there are in gross lab, but you'll be in preclin a LOT more)
--you buy some instruments and rent others
--You have to buy a certain laptop, the DVD curriculum (there are no textbooks at UB...just a DVD), and loupes
