Hi everyone,

This is extremely important to my bf and I am looking for helpful information if any of you can provide it. He is technically an international on an F1 visa (though has lived in the US since he was 7 - his parents didn't do the immigration work properly). Assume that he's admitted to medical school. He doesn't qualify for federal loans, is not wealthy at all (i.e. does not have personal funds to pay), and cannot find a cosigner for a loan. Does anyone know of other loan options (i.e. those not requiring a cosigner) that would help him go to medical school? He is very capable and determined (he also was an Ivy League undergraduate).

Please help if you can!

I was in a similar situation back in 2009 when I graduated undergrad. Almost all public medical schools don't even accept applications from international students. Few private schools are open to international applicants, but you CANNOT attend the school, unless you can show that you have enough money to cover all four years by putting money (usually around 300k) into an escrow account. This is because international applicants dont qualify for any student loans.

In my case I just waited until I got a green card and i am matriculating this year. However, if you apply as an MD/PHD candidate most schools wont care since u get a stipend anyway. Since he went to an ivy league school, I am assuming he must be pretty accomplished academically, so this is probably his best bet.
