First, congrats to all of the 4th years today.

A quick question: I'm a first year deciding on some summer research. I can either do research with our relatively well known department chair, or with a less well known but still fairly prolific professor doing basic science research in prostate cancer. I feel a tiny bit of obligation to the second, as I have been in touch with her about doing summer research since I got on campus, but I don't think either of us would be too offended if I went with the rad onc dept. chair.

What would you guys choose? If I ended up doing a research project with the chair, I'd be doing research with one of his residents, and wouldn't really have all that much time working directly under the guy. I try to show my face to talk to him every few months, so I'm not just another face when it's time for clinical rotations/a letter.

The advantage I see with the second professor is that I'd be able to get to know her better, and it'd give me another letter come residency app time, it'd give me a chance to do research (which I have come to appreciate more as I've left college and come to med school), and I'd hope to get some sort of publication out.
