Hello all!

I have a quick qeustion that may have been addressed before but I have yet to see it. I am considering specialties throughout my third year, and I am trying to find out a little about each. I had a couple questions:

1. What do most psychiatrists do after residency? Do most work for large hospital sponsered clinics, or start solo practice? Are the jobs plentiful and which states are especially in demand or undersupplied?

2. I loved my psychiatry rotation, but is the pathology that you typically see on it the same in private practice (i.e. am I just going to be dealing with one or two conditions all the time in private practice)?

3. FInally, why did you guys choose psychiatry?

Thanks

1. The great thing about psych is the number of options you have. Some decide to go into private practice, state hospitals, county mental health clinics, academic centers, or a combination. You don’t have to worry about jobs, because there is a huge need for psychiatrists in >90% of the country especially child psych.

2. I did my 3rd year rotation in outpatient with some consults. 4th year I did a rotation at a state hospital. I was worried that the chronic cases would turn me away from psych, but I loved that rotation too. You will see the same pathology, but more chronic schizophrenia with inpatient.

3. I choose psych because I loved working with the patients and seeing how quickly their lives can change with help. It’s amazing how debilitating the conditions are and how much function can be restored with meds/therapy. You never have a boring day. I spend about 1 whole hr a day just laughing at what I see and hear. You just can’t help but laugh sometimes. Lastly, you do save lives and relationships.

Thank you for the reply!

I hope that you are right about the job availability. I just never see jobs advertised in Louisiana, and I would love to stay in my home state. I am actually thinking of doing a program that combines psych, peds and child psych into one 5 year program.

What is your typical day like? Mostly office practice or hospital? Is the call frequent?
