Hello there!

I don't know if there has been any previous post on my exact question (I know there are similar ones) but I wanted to ask why can't an optometrist perform surgery on patients like ophthalmologists can, providing that they just get the education to do so...both go to a four year institution and both specialize in the eyes. Why don't optometry schools just teach surgery?

Providing that, why would students want to go through four years of medical school then four/three years of residency to just specialize in the eyes? (I'd rather do Inter. Med. and do a fellowship in something that doesn't have a specialty school in and of itself like for example GI or cardiology) Couldn't that be eliminated if the question above is implemented?

Oi vey.

Because most optometrist DON'T want to be performing surgeries. That is why they chose this path.

Look at other posts. You just pulled the dead horse out of the closet and now you're waiting for everybody to come around and start beating it.

This should go well.

:beat:

Are there any mods. left out there? I wonder, as moderation (of topics, of users) seems to be the last thing a person can find on these boards. Save everyone 112 pages of bitchy stupidity, and close this thread, now — don't make this become the paragraph someone quotes on page 87, six months from now.

I think that would be a most excellent question to ask at your Optometry School interview if you really want to impress them !
