Hello there!
I don't know if there has been any previous post on my exact question (I know there are similar ones) but I wanted to ask why can't an optometrist perform surgery on patients like ophthalmologists can, providing that they just get the education to do so...both go to a four year institution and both specialize in the eyes. Why don't optometry schools just teach surgery?
Providing that, why would students want to go through four years of medical school then four/three years of residency to just specialize in the eyes? (I'd rather do Inter. Med. and do a fellowship in something that doesn't have a specialty school in and of itself like for example GI or cardiology) Couldn't that be eliminated if the question above is implemented?
