Hi everyone, I've been living in
Japan, basically bumming and teaching english for a couple of years now (deciding when to jump
back into school and start the process of applying to
optometry schools already!), but I was wanted to know
if there would ever be potential to work as an
optometrist here in Japan. Does anyone know some details for this country?
I'm sure speaking japanese is necessary (which I can do with some
practice, although what extent of fluency would be absolutely necessary I'm not sure of). and having a visa would be needed, but I can take
care of that. But does anyone know
about job availability, hiring process, work
environment, certification tests, etc.? I know that
some docs work on military bases, but I'm talking
about potentially working like a regular optometrist
here.
I've just got a little attached to this place now,
and even though I may be fine with never living here
again, it would be nice to know if there was that
potential.
I've read some articles I found online, and I've
heard that a lot of commercial shops don't actually have ODs. they just have
techs using auto-refractors, which I guess might be legal here? But of course, that
only works sometimes, for some people, and I know people need to go to see real
optometrists. Well, i'd be much appreciated if anyone had any info. or places to look for it.
