Optometry in the year 2010.

What do you think will be different under the scope of optometry around 2010?

I'm hoping they will permit some type of LASIK procedures for O.D's

If you want to do surgical procedures, why not go to medical school and become an ophthalmologist?

I have absolutely no interest in doing LASIK or any other refractive surgeries. There's more than enough work for ODs without those priveledges. In my opinion, it's just a can of worms that we'd be opening ie: not enough training, malpractice, insurance costs, etc. Like powermd said, if you want to do surgery, become an MD.

Because this argument has occured about a hundred or so times on this forum, lets end it now. Lets keep this to just comments about where YOU see optometry going and not argueing about scope of practice.

This has nothing to do with anything, but my friend (26 y.o) got lasik a few weeks ago. He paid $2500 for it (he's making payments though)

He's really glad he had it done as now he is fine w/o glasses or contacts......

Optometrists doing lasik?
I dont know: my motto is that if you are not properly trained in something, you have no business doing anything.
