Hi everyone,

Are individual courses in optometry school really that much harder than undergraduate courses? I went to a pretty competitive school, and I can't imagine courses being any harder than the biochem courses I have taken. Is it just hard because your required to take 20 hours a semester?

As far as subject matter goes, the individual classes aren't much different than your undergrad science (chem, physics, bio etc.) courses. The anatomy and pathology (systemic and ocular) courses have massive amounts of info to memorize. It's when you are taking 5 of these courses at the same time and trying to juggle that with practicing procedures when it feels more difficult than undergrad.

I have not really come across material in OD school that was terrible difficult. By that I mean, you will probably never say, "I just don't understand this." You will probably say, "What was that drug? There were 115 on this exam, I just cant remember!" Or, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, EVERY RETINAL PATHOLOGY LOOK LIKE A WHITE DOT!" As the previous post said, you are taking several of these courses at the same time, so the amount of material gets very heavy. For example, we had an extra credit quiz today for a course. The prof never went over the material in class, but rather just told us what pages in the text it would be over...there were over 100 pgs!

You can get through it, every year I look at the graduating class pictures and think, "If that idiot can get through, so can I."

Personally, I thought my Undergrad was at least 2~3x more difficult than Optometry school.

Then again, I majored in Quantum/theretical Physics. I think I studied 1/2 as much in optometry compared to my undergrad but did 2x better in GPA. Go figures !!

I have to admit.. I've said that too  I noticed I said it more during pharmacology than any other class.
