Hello!

I have two optometry school interviews coming up in the next couple of weeks, and I would love some ideas for prep tips. I am especially nervous because these interviews are for two of my favorite schools that I have applied to. I have been participating in mock interviews at my undergrad school, but they only ask general questions about myself & my experiences.

What kind of optometry-specific interview questions have you received in the past? How have you prepared for those/how do you wish you prepared differently?

Also, does anyone know of good websites/links/resources that goes into an explanation of how optometric practice is regulated in the US/in different states? I know that each state has an optometry board, but how is this further organized?

Thanks!

Hi,

So some of the most common questions that pretty much every school asks is: Why Optometry? Why do u want to come to our school? Tell us about yourself. Certain schools will ask some tough questions: like what would you do if u caught someone cheating on a test, explain Optometry to a 4th grader. I will be honest I kind of BSed the second question because I was thrown off by it. I interviewed at NOVA and these questions were asked there. I also interviewed at ICO and UAB, but they didn’t ask any technical questions. For the most part, it is just a personality check. Well for me it was. I thought of the things I wanted to say for those questions and practiced with siblings. I did research on each school and figured out which unquie aspects of each school I wanted to say. I also looked over my entire application to prepare an answer for any grade or oat discrepancies and I reviewed my personal statement and Extracurricular activities. Btw, What schools are u interviewing at?

Some interview questions I've gotten were: "what challenges have you seen in the field of optometry during your shadowing?" "How do you plan on getting involved/ give back to community during your time in optometry school?" "Why do you want to come to our school?" "Who is someone you regard as a leader & why?" "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" was asked about some classes I took in undergrad because my interviewers thought the classes had interesting titles. was given a scenario & asked how I would act in that situation
A lot of times the interviewers really just want to get to know you! So the questions can't really be that hard, as long as it is a type of conversational-based interview !
