Oral Pathology

To current dentists and dental students:

Please explain to me what you know about Oral Pathology as a specialty. I am wondering what the general consensus is in the dental community as well as the type of career an oral pathologist has (work hours, private practice/hospital/lab, etc.) It seems there are only a few residencies available in the US (14 according to one website). Is this a competitive field (at least by Dental Specialty standards)?

It's a pretty small specialty. OMP's usually work in academic institutions where they teach and operate the school's biopsy service but there are some that are on staff at hospitals, and even some that work in private practice (biopsy service or treating patients clinically). I'm not sure what the pay is like in private practice but in academic institutions its probably less than what a GP makes. From what I have gathered it's not a very competitive specialty but at the same time I don't think they're going to accept you if you barely passed the boards. Go on dentaltown and send Dr. Brent Accurso a message, he's finishing an oral path residency, and I think he went to dental school at Michigan too. I had the chance to shadow a local OMP, it's pretty cool stuff but patient interaction is limited. Hope this helps.
