Just noticed that on the program requirements for many OS programs, they require a NMBE CBSE as an application prerequisite. I was under the impression that if you have a numerical score on Part I of the boards, that you do not need to take this. Does anyone have any updated info on this matter? Did the programs change there minds?

If you have a numerical score on NBDE Part 1 you do not have to take the NBME for 2012-2013 cycle.

Sofar, some programs, as far as I know, Ohio state, Cook County, Cincinati ( and a few more that I dont know for sure) recommend it on their websites. Cook and UCSF-fresno I think require it regardless of NBDE I score. It seems they're pushing for this test.

not sure why, but about half of the programs on Pass/Match search engine now list the NBME as a requirement, dont know what's going on 😕

"... Dental students with a numeric score on Part 1 of dental boards are not required to take the CBSE."

The stuff on PASS isn't always correct... I would check with programs individually.

Has anyone taken the CBSE, and if so, how did they study for it? I'm assuming using the USMLE Step 1 book?

any update on this matter? I also have a numerical part I school and was also under the impression that we are not required to take the CBSE. Should we contact each program directly?

Yeah I would say contact them and ask. Some programs want the score because they believe it is more indicative of what they're getting (probably true) and more comparable with other applicants I assume. If you are trying to match a 6 year program or are a 3rd year (i.e. not out of school) and have not taken the CBSE I would strongly suggest looking into it.

I have a numerical board score as well. However, I opted to take the CBSE simply because most of the applicant pool will have taken it. It is far more relevant for OMS than the NBDE. I can only speak for myself but I had to work extremely hard to learn stuff at a much higher level than I did for DS.

As I was looking at the PASS search engine today some programs seem to require it regardless. However, I am not entirely convinced that the information is 100% accurate as a number of programs said they want the GRE and DAT scores as well. As Standard mentioned it would be advantageous to verify with each program. I have yet to understand why there is such poor communication b/n PASS and the programs each and every year.

After going through this entire process last year and getting accepted into a program, I can assure you that PASS is not even close to being accurate for many of the programs. I would recommend that you do your best to contact each program directly or simply submit everything to all the programs. This will avoid a last minute scramble and make your lives much better during this stressful time. Good luck everyone.
