Hello

First off, thanks to all who contribute to this valuable forum. I have a couple of questions about specialty training and residency in the UK.. I have read on the subject and know pits and pieces of info but I would like to ask some questions.

I have a BDS from Egypt [top 10% in class--if that would matter 🙂 ]. I have done 1 year of something equivalent to Vocational training in a university hospital. I am planning to take the MJDF as soon as possible starting the first part this year.

Now, I wish to gain specialty training/ residency in either Oral surgery or Endodontics in the UK....

From my understanding is that I need to apply to a DF1 year first...then apply to SpR post.... is that Right?

My questions are

1) Do have to do DF1 and DF2 in the UK before applying to a specialty training residency? Can I skip the DF1 since I did something similar in Egypt.

2) Given the info above (BDS from egypt, top 10% in class, High school diploma is British (straight As), MJDF), what else can I do to increase my chances of getting accepted for a specialty training or DF year.. I read that many people don't make the cut every year in the DF year and are put on a reserve list.... WHY?? Where and how could I apply for a specialty training post

3) From what I understand that a specialty training through NHS, will lead to CCST in oral surgery or endo. And that during this training, I should be PAID..... However, I saw on university websites like kings school and others a program (Master of clinical dentistry) that will lead to CCST and a masters degree. But one have to pay a ton of money for this program......

---my question is what is the DIFFERENCE between them? aside from the fact that you get a Msc title to add to your name.. I mean clinical skills wise... don't both routes give the same clinical skills needed to apply for specialty license.. Do the ones in the university program get to do more hands on procedures....

4) In the NHS specialty training in Oral Surgery, will I get to do advanced implants, sinus lifts, ridge augmentation, fixation of mandibular fracture, Cysts removal.... OR will these be shifted to the OMFS residents... Will I also be able to do the regular procedure such as fillings, prosthesis, root canals or all these will be shifted to the resident in theses fields.

5) During the specialty training, Can I moonlight to work in private practice to earn some more money or this is not allowed. assuming I passed the license exams of course. How much does the DF1 , DF2, oral surgery specialty residency pay anyway?

6) If I finish my 3 year specialty through NHS, in which I get paid. Is there any university that would grant me a Master of Clinical Dentistry without having to do all the clinical training all over again.. Just do a thesis and the academic part of the masters. As hopefully after finishing the NHS specialty training, I would have earned enough to apply for a degree granting program.

I apologize for the long post but I would be grateful for any help

Cheers..

I will post more later but if you are non UK or EU citizen, the chances of you getting accepted for OS position is very slim. Plus you would need a medical dental degree that is registrable with the GDC & GMC.

Thanks for the reply

I know that Oral and maxillofacial Surgery requires both degrees.. But Oral Surgery doesn't. Here is the link of the British association of Oral Surgery..http://www.baos.org.uk/Training.cfm

I have checked of a couple of Deanery's website, they don't mention in the requirement to apply for DF year that one be British or from the EU..

I will try posting in the international forum as well, but I would appreciate if people on this sub forum could help out too

Entry requirements include possession of a registered primary dental qualification from a UK university or a qualification of equivalent standard by a university in Europe and possession of a Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS or MFD) or an approved equivalent (e.g. FDS).

Entry is competitive and quality assured by Deaneries currently. The future changes in commissioning of PG Training, with loss of the Deaneries, will probably be replaced by a national commissioning body for dental training.

Above is what I found on their website.

I don't think a BDS from Egypt is a registered qualification unless you have completed all ORE parts, so this would be your first hurdle. Until you have completed the MFDS examinations, you still have another hurdle to pass through.

In order to be accepted in as a PG training, as a non-EU/UK national, you would need to be admitted into the UK with a work visa. I think sometime ago, the postgrad deans stopped issuing visas for trainee spots. Now, if you are a full fee paying international student working towards a research degree (such as MPhil or MSc), they may issue you a study visa and let you into the program.

I know lots of colleagues who instead completed SHO (Senior House Officer) positions in Oral Surgery at various hospitals in the past. Not sure if this is still easily obtainable for foreigners (non-UK/EU nationals)... perhaps SHO of JHO (Junior House Officer) positions may be the best bet for you for now while you study for MFDS exams (or similar qualification exams).

I found that if you could contact any of these facilities in Egypt, you may be able to sit MFDS and hence speed up your admission into OS?
