What do oral surgeons do for postgrad educations? Is it med school or dental school?

It is a 4 year residency. Some programs offer you the option of going to the last two years of med school to get an MD in addition to your dental degree. Earning the MD is completely optional.

I just wanted to clarify that you must complete four years of dental school prior to entering an oral surgery (OMFS) residency program. There are both 4-year (no MD) and 6-year (MD) programs out there.

Thanks for the responses 🙂 I think I'm going to shoot for oral surgery b/c I love dentistry and if I don't get to specilize in oral surgery, then I can always become a general dentist.

Your logic doesn't make sense here. You are going to shoot for oral surgery because you love dentistry. People usually apply to specialties because general dentistry isn't for them. They want to do something different. Oral surgery, although it requires an understanding of dentistry, is very much a specialty. Which implies that it is considerably different than a general dentist who provides some oral surgery services.

Sorry about that vague post. What I meant is that I like/love oral surgery as well as general dentistry. I desire to specialize in oral surgery, but if I'm unable to do that then I can still become a general dentist with the education I've acquired.

so do you have to be enrolled in a DDS(DMD)/MD program prior to beginning, or what if you're just in the dental program and also want to do MD? Do you have to take the mcat or something?

First, you finish your dental degree

Then you rock the boards, suck up some facutly, get into an Oral Surgery program with a combined MD. No MCAT. But you have to write USMLE's

search AAOMS website for program info.
