Hi,

Just wondering at our school there are 3 different Organic Chemistry classes offered. THere is Organic 1 and Organic 2, this is common at most schools I think, but we also have a class called Organic and Biological Chemistry. It is a second year course aimed at Life Science students who want a course in Organic chem but do not want to major in Chemistry. Just wondering if I took this class (I already took Organic 1), would these two classes would count towards the full year organic chem requirement?? I emailed NYU but they did not give me a clear answer....any input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

It really depends on the school. it looks like the class you took is similar to bio-chem. I am in a similar situation, I simply called up each of the schools to make sure it was transferable... it seems like the private schools are more concerned about the class title, and the state schools about the actual description and course #, etc... so anyway, i would recommend just calling up an admissions officer, i know they can be vague sometimes :/ but just keep trying. By the way, what school did you go to and what were the classes called?

I would play it safe and take the standard Orgo I and II. The school I'm taking my prereqs, UMass-Boston has a separate track for nursing students that combines Gen chem and Organic Chem into one year. This could be the similar deal with the other course that you mention spershad. The barebones organic chem course for Biology majors at your institution. Nursing students at my school don't need a full blown course in Organic Chemistry so it is abbreviated for them. I wouldn't recommend this barebones approach.

my school kinda has the same thing:
We have regular organic chem designed for chem students and we have organic chem for biological science majors and health professions. Both are ochems and both satisfly the ochem requirement, im actually taking the one for biological scie majors partly because i am in that division

Take the Orgo-II. The combined chem/ochem/biochem course is for nursing students.

Thanks for the input....I will take Organic 2 just to be safe. I go to Dalhousie University in Canada....The full name of the courses are:

CHEM 2401.03: Introductory Organic Chemistry: Structure, Concepts of Mechanisms and Spectroscopy. (This is Organic 1)

CHEM 2402.03: Introductory Organic Chemistry: Reactivity of Functional Groups. (Organic 2)

CHEM 2441.03: Foundations of Organic and Biological Chemistry. This is the one I was going to take.

Interesting thing though is at our school there is a Dental School and they require either 2401 and 2402 OR just 2441...dunno how that works but anyways, thanks for the suggestions!
