Hey guys, I'm going to be a sophomore this fall semester at Tufts University in Boston and I just had some questions about when to take organic chem. But first I'll have to give you guys some background. Last year at Tufts as a freshman, I took general Chem 1 and 2 and the mechanical physics. Then I signed up to take the first semester of organic chemistry at a nearby college in my hometown, Seattle, at Pacific Lutheran University since it's the only semester school in this area. Anyways, I had to sign up for organic 1 for the summer since I applied to an early acceptance 7 year dental program here at Tufts that requires you do so. The requirements are normal things like bio, physics, chem but only ONE semester of organic. So it was my plan to just get the one semester out of the way and take it in the summer at PLU. Well turns out, I was denied later from the program due to not high enough grades. Now I look at the other dental schools for which I have to apply for in about 3 years and I see that ALL of them require TWO semesters of organic chemistry, so that throws off my scheduling quite a bit. So I asked my advisor what I should do. Here's what she said.

I should take the first semester of organic chemistry at PLU, then take the second semester of organic next summer. So basically, taking the two semester of organic chemistry a year apart. She recommended that I do this because it would be insane trying to fit in a full year of organic chemistry in my schedule for sophomore year. She also reassured me that it wasn't too big of a deal that I was taking these pre-dental requirements at another school, rather than at Tufts. So I have some questions about this.

1.) Do dental schools really dislike it when students take science courses outside of their own school? ie - pacific lutheran university
2.) To you guys that have already taken organic chem, do you think it's quite doable taking them a year apart, or will that make it a bunch harder for me?
3.) As long as I study hard during the summer, will I be prepared enough for the organic section of the DAT which I hear isn't that bad?

Please advise me on if taking my advisor's advice is a good thing or not, I just want to double check. And also, please rule out the possibility of taking organic chem my sophomore year, as I cannot handle that many lab courses at once, considering I am taking physics and bio next year. Thanks SO much guys!

sorry for the bump, but I really need some of your advice guys. 👍

1.I dont think it really matters if you have a good GPA.
2.well, depends on your class schedul,I think it is better to take them in the same year, but if you have good memory, then it really doesn't matter
3.haven't take DAT yet, can't answer it

I'm taking organic 1 and 2 a year apart, but I'm not taking Organic 2 until this fall.

I really would have rather jumped right into Org. Chem II, but my bosses were really being jerks at the time and the only time that I can take it is during the work day.

Thanks guys for the replies. But can anybody comment on how much of the DAT relies on the second half of orgo, and I would be setting myself up for disaster if I took Orgo I and Orgo II a year apart? And as for dental schools caring more about the high GPA rather than taking the courses at your own school, I hope that is true and with that, I'll probably explain that I was required to take Orgo I during the summer for the 7 year program (which I didn't get into), thus causing the awkward year apart orgo schedule. 👍
