HI am taking the DAT on August 15 and started studying about a week ago. I am also taking 8 hours of coursework this summer so i won't get to pull the 6-8 hour studying for 2 months deal, but about 2 hours everyday (and bio and gen chem are pretty fresh in my mind from the previous semester). Additionally, one of the classes im taking this summer is organic chemistryI so i'm studying that at the same time with DAT material.

my question is, wiill knowing the organic chemistry I material alone be sufficient in doing well (19+) on that section on the DAT? i've heard mixed things and the pre-health advisor at my school advised against it.
if there's more than just the first semester, is it a lot more that i wouldnt really be able to learn on my own?

I have yet to take the DAT so take my advice as a grain of salt. From my experience taking practice exams, the majority of questions from Orgo spawn from Orgo 2 reactions. You might get about 10 questions regarding substitution and elimination reactions, even R and S. But about 60% of the questions came from Orgo 2 mechanism and reactions.

If I were u I wouldn't risk my O-chem score like that.
The O-chem section of the DAT includes lots and lots of reactions, and many of these reactions are included in O-chem2.
I think you should wait till you complete O-chem2. That way you have a better understanding of the material.
I don't think you'd be able to study O-chem2 on your own and still pull off a 19+, unless you really have a in depth understanding of O-chemistry and the underlying reaction mechanisms.

I'd try to plan on taking the DAT asap after finishing ochem 2. The ochem section is too easy to not capitalize on it. I took it today and it seemed pretty straight forward. You either know the reactions/principles behind them, or you don't. Not as many random questions like you might get in bio or even gen chem.
