I am enrolled in 19 units and school started today, but I'm a little anxious as to if I'm overdoing it...

For those of you who had Orgo, what are your throughts PLEASE?

Organic + Lab
Biology + Lab
Psychology + Lab
History (We are given the questions, just need to memorize them and regurgitate them on the exam)
and Psych of Adolesence (quiz each week on lectures and 1 page papers each week, no midterm/final)

That's a total of 5 classes (8 if you count labs).

I already quit my job to commit my time to this courseload, but I'm not sure if that's enough. Is it possible to get an A in Bio and Orgo with all the other (#$( ??

Please let me know your though... thank you!

It looks ok to me. It seems that your psych of adolescence and history classes are easy enough that htey won't constitute a major source of worry/stress. Orgo isn't as bad as a lot of people make it seem. Just make sure you stay on top of things, use flash cards (reaction on one side, mechanism on the other for the more important rxns)..

I took 20 credits my first smester of orgo too, i had orgo/genetics/history/sociology/french/research. Everything on there besides orgo and genetics was basically BS...so go for it!

Thanks brotha! ... I will go for it. I mean, the history teacher already gave us the questions that will be on the exam (the first day). It's just time consuming to memorize all of them, otherwise it's BS. Not much in depth stuff. But I guess if you did the Orgo plus all that other stuff, it gives me hope. You mind sharing your grades that semester?

Thanks dude!

Piece of cake. Seriously, I believe you can do it and really enjoy yourself at the same time. I'd say go for it, especially since you have courses where you can regurgitate material, and courses w/o a midterm or a final. The credit hours may seem high, but it cuts back on your studying.

Who am I to talk, I have 36 credit hours this semester.

36?!?! How is that even possible? Granted, even though 6 of my 15 credits are research at about 4 hours per credit, I don't have homework to do in that.

But anyway, as for the OP, it seems like you have a large but manageable course load for the semester. Just make sure you stay ahead on things, because when you take on a lot, the busy times for each class always happen at the same time.

i'm gonna disagree with everyone and say you're taking too much. that's a brutal schedule - 3 sciences AND 2 electives. even IF you stay on top of things you're gonna be killing yourself. what about time for other stuff, like volunteering or just enjoying life? also, from an academic perspective, even if you manage to do well in the classes, you have to consider whether you'll really be learning it, or just remembering stuff short term for exams. you will need orgo and bio again for the mcat, so it is wise to learn the material now instead of trying to learn it from a kaplan instructor or something to that effect. if you do it, good luck, but don't cram yourself. you'll be shocked to find out how much elective time you have during senior year.

I took organic while working 24 hours a week along with Bio and Physics. I was a post-bac student, so I was ONLY focused on school, not the social part of college, but even taking orgo after being out of school for a few years and not really taking any science in undergrad, I didn't think it was that bad. I had an amazing professor, which helped, but if you stay on top of it, read the chapter before lecture so you know what the prof is talking about, and do the problems, organic isn't that bad. I got to lead the seminar this summer so feel free to PM me if you have any questions. 🙂

Ok, so i'm a sista 😉 Sal being short for Sally🙂

As for my grades, i got A's in everything, and B in orgo...BUT...that's b/c i'm pre-programmed to think that anything that's not bio i can't get an A in (hoping to change that this semester with physics..)

I managed to have a social life, was doing the research for credit, but there was no clinical stuff. I also have a bias against psych classes...i don't see them as "science" so the previous poster said 3 science classes...but i think they're only 2.

Definitely manage your time well. I personally tend to do well when i have more to do. Like last semester, i dropped down to 14 credits (dunno why i did that, wanted to focus on orgo 2...also alot of confusion in regards to what i wanted to do in life...etc so just wanted time to think) and ended up with 2 Bs something i didn't do when i had 20 credits to worry about.

Thanks sista! 😀

You know, I'm gonna feel it out these next two weeks. If it is overwhelming and my time out of class is not enough, then I'll drop the History class. I totally feel you about having more to do being correlated to higher grades. I am the same way. If I am not busy, I start looking into the subject too much and it throws me off. I have an awesome Orgo teacher, the lab is much easier than the second part of G-Chem Lab (I didn't know that) and we'll see how Bio lab goes.. so far, I'm holding the 19 units all the way.

Thanks again for the inspiration!
