Hi,

I'm deciding whether I should take both orgo 1 and 2 in the summer and writing the DAT in late Oct after some studying. or just do orgo 1 and study for DAT and write it end of Aug and then do the orgo 2 later. Do any of you guys know if orgo 1 is good enough for the DAT or should I be taking both orgo? I'm having this issue since everybody says it's a must to apply early with the DAT score. WHat do you guys think?

Writing the DAT? im confused....

If you mean taking the DAT after taking orgo 1, I wouldn't suggest it. There is some people out there that were successful with it, but you want to make sure you ace it the first time you take it and not throw your money away.
Are you serious about taking both orgo 1 and 2 during summer?
I don't know about any schools allowing students to take both of those classes in the same semester.

writing = taking

Many schools have different summer sessions. At my school (USF), we have summer A, summer B, and summer C sessions. First half of summer is Summer A..... second half is summer B... and summer C runs across both. Pretty sure their school has something similar, so they would be taking orgo 1 first, and then orgo 2 after. If that is the case, then I would say do that and then take the DAT. If you dont take orgo 2 before you take the DAT, then you will not have seen a lot of orgo material and would have a lower score on that section.
It is important to have your scores in early..... but not at the sacrafice of the quality of score.

I strongly recommend taking orgo 1 and 2 before attempting to take the DAT. It covers both orgo 1 and 2. People have gotten away with just taking orgo 1 before taking the DAT but those people are unusual cases. It would take exceptional motivation to self teach orgo 2.

I know somebody who was in my Kaplan course without taking Orgo 1 and 2. Let's just say that on the practicals they never scored double digits. And they never learned any of the material.

What a waste of money.👎

I agree I think you might be lost without taking Orgo. Its not wroth a low score in one of the sciences

For sure take orgo 1+2 before the DAT. You're going to have to study the orgo 2 info anyway, so you might as well learn it in school rather than trying to wade through all of it on your own.

Hi, I decided to take the DAT right after my spring semester last year -- right after completing Organic I and before taking Organic II. I used the Cliffs Notes for Organic Chemistry I and II to supplement the Kaplan blue book, Destroyer, and stuff.

I wound up getting a 20, but there were things I just plain didn't know. If you do well in Organic I, then you can pick up some of the basic concepts and be able to do alright. However, you will be sacrificing that point (or three) that you would have scored higher if you had taken the second half of the sequence. It's a tough call.

But I just reread the post and saw you're considering the difference between August and October. Is that for the next cycle (D1 class of 2009)? October will be awfully late.

Just my two cents. 🙂
