Dear All,

Can anyone tell me the role of CCl4 in the following RXN. I know that you can use X2 to get a di-halogenated alkane from and alkene, but I am not sure why they three CCl4 into the mix in this question.

C=C -- (Br2 + CCl4) --->

The question is from the Princeton Review

It's a nonpolar solvent that Cl2 is dissolved in (also nonpolar). FYI - alkenes are not on the AAMC outline so it's absolutely unnecessary to be spending your time studying it, unless you feel like you have all the time in the word 🙂 ... it's very low yield though and the concepts don't really contribute much to your understanding of other concepts that are tested on the MCAT. Huge waste of time.
